Disinfection of Barn and Water System in a Poultry Farming Operation

Scenario description

A poultry broiler barn needs to be not only cleaned but also disinfected between two production cycles. Due to environmental considerations, the client wishes to replace the current disinfectant based on glutaraldehyde.

Special considerations

The watering system has been routinely flushed and cleaned but has never been disinfected. Visible slime deposits are present in the pipelines. Disinfection is required to eliminate wet contaminants and biofilms from the system.

Implementation:

After a successful production cycle, the market-ready poultry is collected. The barn is meticulously cleaned of used litter, manure, dust, and leftover feed. Subsequently, all surfaces are washed with a high-pressure cleaner, water, and detergent. Then, a 10% disinfection solution is freshly prepared in the supply tank of a crop sprayer equipped with a spray lance. Once dried, this disinfection solution is sprayed onto all cleaned surfaces. After the sprayed disinfection solution has dried, new litter can be spread.

Concurrently, the watering system is cleaned: Drinking bowls are removed and treated separately. The pipeline system is flooded with a disinfection solution (1-2 ml / l) using a proportional dosing system and thoroughly flushed the next morning. Significant amounts of dislodged deposits are visible in the flushing water.

Result:

The barn and the watering/feed system are perfectly cleaned and disinfected. The new production cycle can begin under hygienically optimal conditions. As a result, outbreaks of diseases and the need for medications/antibiotics are very rare.
