Treatment of Drinking and Utility Water in a Military Camp
- What is treated? Treated drinking and utility water
- With which product? Sanosil Super 25
- Method of application? Water preservation / Protection of treated water from recontamination
Situation
As part of a humanitarian mission, a military water extraction unit ensures the water supply in the field camp for approximately 1,000 people. Due to inadequate local water supply, the tap water on site is not safe for drinking. The treated drinking water must meet the quality standards for tap water in Switzerland.
Special Considerations
The supply of safe drinking water must be self-sufficient and maintained for an extended period. The use of chlorine for pipeline protection is undesirable due to the unfamiliar and unpleasant taste for many soldiers.
Implementation
Raw water is extracted from four newly drilled deep wells and temporarily stored in a sedimentation basin. After multistage filtration through particle, activated carbon, and reverse osmosis filters, the treated water is pumped into a reservoir. It is then dosed with Sanosil Super 25 using a proportional dosing pump to protect the treated water from recontamination. The water is subsequently distributed to the camp’s water network using booster pumps. The water quality and Sanosil content are continuously monitored.
Result
The camp has been in operation as an active, multinational UN base for over 12 years. The water treatment system has provided more than 10,000 soldiers and civilian specialists with safe drinking and utility water over the years. The „customers“ particularly appreciate the absence of the unpleasant chlorine taste, which is commonly used for this purpose.
