Case Study: Surface Disinfection in a Nursing Home

Disinfection of critical contact points

In care facilities, hygiene measures must be tailored to the specific needs of the residents. Due to their partially compromised immune systems, they are particularly vulnerable in case of infection. Regular disinfection of contact points such as handrails, door handles, elevator buttons, etc. – especially during outbreaks of contagious diseases – enhances overall hygiene and reduces the spread of germs within the building.

  • What is treated? Hygiene-critical contact points
  • With which product? Sanosil SD1
  • Application method? Spray-wipe disinfection, wipe disinfection with pre-soaked wipes (SanoWipes)

Situation description

A retirement and nursing home uses the surface disinfectant Sanosil SD1 as part of its operational hygiene program. Routine disinfection primarily targets hygiene-critical contact points such as door handles, handrails, and light switches. In the event of an outbreak of contagious diseases like COVID-19, influenza, or noroviruses, additional hygiene, quarantine, and disinfection measures are implemented.

Special considerations

Many residents have compromised immune systems and fragile overall health. Therefore, hygiene is taken very seriously. At the same time, disinfection measures are applied as specifically and appropriately as possible to minimize exposure to problematic chemicals for both staff and residents. Sanosil SD1, with hydrogen peroxide as its main component, which decomposes into water and oxygen, meets these requirements ideally.

Implementation

Hygiene-critical surfaces are sprayed with foamed Sanosil SD1. Spray bottles with foam attachments are used to prevent the undesirable formation of disinfectant aerosols. Wiping with appropriate cloths optimizes the distribution of the disinfectant on the surface and additionally helps mechanically remove any light soiling. For quick interim disinfection of smaller areas, pre-soaked disinfectant wipes with Sanosil SD1 are used from a dispensing bucket.

Result

The rapid efficacy, biocidal range (including noroviruses) of SD1, and its compatibility have impressed the housekeeping and nursing staff. Additionally, other properties such as foaming ability, excellent wetting behavior, lack of unpleasant odor, and good material compatibility are also praised. As a result, SD1 has secured a permanent place in the operational hygiene concept.
